Prof George Samonis

Dr George Samonis, born in 1951, is a Medical Oncologist and Infectious Diseases specialist, Professor of Medicine at the University of Crete, Greece.

He studied Medicine at the University of Athens, Greece, and holds a Doctoral Degree from the same University. He is specialized, and board certified, in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Infectious Diseases.

He served the University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, USA, initially as a Fellow, and later as Research Associate, and the University of Crete, initially as Assistant, latter as Associate, and finally as Professor of Medicine.

He was the head of the Department of Hematology for 6 years and currently he is the head of the Infectious Diseases Unit of the University Hospital of Heraklion, Greece.

Dr Samonis has organized several research projects with the University of Crete, in collaboration with the University of Texas. The result of his work is 190 original articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. Additionally, he has been the author of 20 chapters of medical books. His publications have attracted ~2500 international citations. He is co-inventor and has the patent of two antifungal formulations. He has participated in 200 National and International Congresses with 250 abstracts He has given 60 lectures in Congresses, Scientific Institutions and Universities, as invited speaker.

Dr Samonis has been member of the Editorial Board of three Medical Journals and he is Reviewer of several others. He is member of 15 Medical Societies, such as the American Society of Medical Oncology and the American Society for Microbiology, and currently the President of the Hellenic Society of Medical Mycology.

His main medical interests include infections in the immunocompromized hosts, with emphasis in fungal infections.
