Dr John D. Hainsworth

Dr. John Hainsworth is currently the Chief Scientific Officer at The Sarah Cannon Research Institute and a partner in Tennessee Oncology, PLLC, in Nashville, Tennessee. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University, followed by a medical degree from Vanderbilt University. After completing an internal medicine residency and a medical oncology fellowship, Dr. Hainsworth remained at Vanderbilt as a faculty member in the Oncology Division from 1981–1993. In 1993, Dr. Hainsworth and Dr. F. Anthony Greco left Vanderbilt to become directors of the newly established Sarah Cannon Cancer Center and to establish a community-based clinical research program. In 2004, Dr. Hainsworth became Chief Scientific Officer of the Sarah Cannon Research Institute, an organization dedicated to facilitating and expanding community-based clinical research.

Dr. Hainsworth has a wide variety of clinical research interests and has published extensively in the areas of unknown primary cancer, lung cancer, and lymphoma. His long-term interest in unknown primary cancer has resulted in the identification of several treatable patient subsets, as well as improvement in empiric chemotherapy. Current work in unknown primary cancer is focused on the clinical evaluation of the diagnostic role of molecular profiling.
